GENOCIDE TODAY
Even One is Too Many
“We are preaching hope, standing on the bones of the past.” -John Rucyahana
Do you see the two images above? These signs of protest and pleading are held up by innocent men, women and children in Syria and Darfur who are dying each day with little to no response. To those who deny genocide still exists, to those who deny genocide could ever happen here, to the those who say modern society has learned from the Holocaust all those years ago; do your research. Many of these countries were peaceful once, were successful, were growing. But, then a corrupt leader would come along and let the lives of his people diminish completely. All it needs is the spark, and that's all it takes for the fire to explode. It could happen anywhere. History and even the recent past has shown that people are ignorant and blind. Your argument? These genocides aren't on the same scale as the Holocaust? Even one life lost is one life too many. These countries aren't modern societies? Ask the people living within them. They are all emerging economies. It's not America's problem? It's the responsibility of the United Nations, including powerful members of the Security Council, such as the United States, to identify and quickly respond to "ethnic cleansing," state sponsored violence, and genocide. It's the responsibility of all people to step in and save these lives, because believe it or not, it may very well happen anywhere, even here.
