GENOCIDES OF OUR PAST
It is a primal part of being human; to succeed and conquer, even if it means the downfall of others. Throughout human history, hundreds of genocides have occurred, leaving millions upon millions of innocent men, women, and children dead. It is even said that one of the Earth's original humanoid species, the Neanderthals, may have disappeared entirely at the hands of genocide thousands of years ago.
The word genocide first appeared in 1944, with a Polish-Jewish lawyer named Raphael Lemkin (1900-1959), attempting to describe the Nazi's systematic murder of 11 million Jews, Poles, gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, and disabled persons. He formed the word "genocide" by combining geno-, from the Greek word for race or tribe, with -cide, derived from the Latin word for killing.
The world finally had a word to describe the crimes human societies committed and would continue to commit.
This research is only a selection of the innumerable genocides of our history.
